The Llama Hiking & History Experience

7 Hours

Explore the Ancient Culture

This package involves a moderate level of physical activity and is not recommended for travelers with back problems or heart conditions.

There’s no better way to truly embrace the Peruvian culture than by embarking on a hike through the Andean landscape while learning about the country’s rich history.

Your trek begins in Chinchero, where you’ll be introduced to the friendly llamas and alpacas who will accompany you on your journey. The first hour of the trip takes you to the Qori Huayrachina Viewpoint, where you’ll find panoramic sights of the mountains and valleys that are beyond spectacular.

After a short rest to take pictures and enjoy a light snack, you’ll continue hiking to the MachuQolqa Archaeological Site. Here, you’ll find innovative examples of the advanced Andean engineering for food preservation developed during or before the time of the Inca Empire. To ensure adequate food supply during times of scarcity, the people strategically built long structures designed to protect agricultural products such as corn and tubers for long periods of time.

Once your hike concludes at Andean Colors, you’ll reward your llamas and alpacas by hand feeding them fresh grass. You’ll also get to interact with the rest of the herd, which is another great photo opportunity. Want to meet one of our Llama of the Month celebrities? We can make it happen! As a bonus, you’ll explore the guinea pig farm and learn about the historical significance of these tiny animals.

You’ll be served a traditional Peruvian lunch that includes a scrumptious soup, a main course lovingly prepared with locally sourced ingredients, and a refreshing beverage that’s a regional favorite known as chicha morada (purple corn drink).

To conclude your experience, you’ll learn about the artisanal weaving process behind the world-famous Peruvian textiles. This ancestral practice has been passed down through generations, and it represents the heart and soul of Andean Colors. You’ll meet some of the highly talented artisans, and you’ll have an opportunity to shop for handmade textiles and fine leather goods in our expansive boutique. This is the perfect spot to purchase colorful souvenirs, unique treasures, and quality products that will surely become precious keepsakes.

When you select this package or shop at our boutique, you’ll be contributing to a social project that is a central part of Andean Colors’ mission. We are dedicated to supporting single mothers in our region who have faced difficult circumstances. By working with us to help preserve Peru’s ancestral traditions and textile artistry, these brave women have discovered a path to independence for themselves and their children.

By choosing Andean Colors, you are making a difference in their lives.
